Sunday Stills - Portraits

This week’s challenge is Portraits. Let’s not only share some beautiful photographs, but also a new tip or two learned along the way. What worked, what didn’t… If you don’t have a willing human subject, it’s just as challenging to take good dog, cat, horse, armadillo portraits ;-).

My friend Joellen and her dogs Sunshine and Woody.

The full sun was a little bright, but because she wasn't having to look directly into it, I think it works. I like the background and was happy with aperture setting. It blurred out the trees just enough so they weren't distracting and kept the focus up front.

Here she's in the shade, away from the direct sunlight, but that dulled out the dogs, and the background, while pretty, is a bit distracting.

A nice "scene". Wish it was a little crisper, but I'm not sure if that was a focusing issue on my end or something else.

I like pictures that tell a story. This one is a short read ;-).

The lighting is really good here. Not too shady, not too bright. Nice pose, nice color, nice setting. Was not able to blur out the background as much as I'd liked.

I like this. Sunshine is super sharp and the sun is gleaming off her glossy coat. Joellen's sleeve and hand are a bit over exposed, but I like the story they tell and I hope she can feel Sunshine when she looks at this picture.

Beautiful set of photos. You have captured the love and affection that your friend has for the dogs. But you've also captured the love and loyalty of the dogs. The contrast is wonderful. Black dogs are the hardest to photograph. You did this well.
It all makes for a great group of photos that she will cherish.

Each photo screamed "love" at me... human for dog, and dog for human. Nice set of potraits.

Your portraits actually "portray"- the bond and love between your friend and her dogs. They all tell a story.

You do an awesome job in the portrait department. I love the fact that they all look so natural and not posed in the least.

What a loving capture of your friend and her dogs. I really like the line of trees in the background of photo #5 so I’m glad you didn’t blur it too much. With varied techniques, you sent the message tied with heartstrings.

A+ on your challenge. You could have a second career. I love the light and focus of #1, but I can see the dog's faces better in #2. They are all wonderful though, and your friend will no doubt be thrilled to have any of them. What a great family.

Oh lovely! These are really lovely. And I love that you varied the aperture so as to let the background be more in focus in some of them.

I love the connection that she has with the dogs in all of the frames as well. I recently did a FurKid (Dog and owner) shoot as well. And the one thing I noticed as being really difficult was to catch the owner looking at the camera instead of the dog. I mean whose to blame her...the dog was really cute. I finally asked her to keep her hand on the dog, look at the camera for a nanosecond while I hit the squeaker. She was able to compile on the second try. And I was able to get a fun picture of her still connected to the dog yet looking at me.

Great job!
