Another New Angel Among Us

Comby

2004? -  August 27, 2020

When I have to 'make the call' on an animal, I sit with them while we wait for the vet and I tell them stories about their life with us.  "Remember when..."  I thank them for being my friend and working hard on the farm and taking good care of everyone...  And then I tell them to go find [someone who was a special friend] because I sure hope we all end up somewhere together again.

"Go find Boo."

A Boy And His Dog

Remember how Boo and Comby were such good friends? And how we were all worried about Comby when Boo died? Well, not only has he finally buddied up with Eli and has a cat friend, but I've also noticed him hanging out with Hank.

Hoping for a little creek action.

"Hank, I think she's out here with that stupid camera again."

"Let's get out of here."

"Okay, Comby, whatever you say."

Brushy

The naming of cats is a difficult matter... T.S. Eliot

I believe Brushy only had one name though. Brushy.

Brushy showed up as a skinny stray shortly after we moved to Equinox Farm and it took awhile to tame him down. He would sneak up on the porch at night to eat and was hungry enough that he'd let me sit out there as he did, but would growl (as he continued to eat) if I tried to touch him. One night however I decided to try to touch the top of his head instead of his back and as I did, he immediately bumped up into my hand and was completely tame from that very second on.

He went to the vet, passed all his tests and got his shots and 'tutored' and immediately settled in. Three mornings later he brought Claire Bear home. Claire Bear was a tiny kitten and I don't know if she was a relative or not, but regardless, Claire Bear was obviously Brushy's cat. They were inseparable and she got to stay as well.

Claire Bear was somehow named right away. Brushy went for weeks as "kitty". We tried all sorts of names, but nothing stuck. One day I asked him directly, "Hey kitty, what is your name?"

"Brushy."

Clear as day in my head. I told Saint Tim and while he didn't think it so strange that the cat shared his name with me, he agreed it was not a suitable "family use" name. We continued to try other monikers. A few weeks later I again said "Kitty, we really need a name for you."

"Brushy."

Brushy it was.

Brushy would walk anywhere with me. He especially loved to go out to the Frog Pond. That was a trip worthy of all the cats and we enjoyed relaxing out there together on summer evenings listening to the farm put itself to bed. Brushy would sit next to me, Eli would sit off by himself and Claire Bear would entertain us all with her mad hunting skills.

Brushy was also the protector of the family. Shortly after Boo came to live with us, he learned this the hard way. Boo was a cat chaser early on and got in a lot of trouble for it. One day I caught him chasing Eli onto the porch. I ran after him, yelling and hitting him with a dish towel. At my side was Brushy, running on his hind legs hissing and slapping Boo as he made a hasty retreat.

More than anything, Brushy wanted to be a house cat. With the darling Wiwi in the house, this was not just not possible. For the last few weeks though, as Brushy's been ill, we moved him inside, out of the cold. Wiwi did get "paddled" a few times for bad behavior, but Brushy ignored her and enjoyed sitting on the couch in front of the fire. Two nights ago he sat out in the wool house with me and we read a sheep book. He was not much interested though and I knew the end was near.

Brushy was an exceptional cat.

A Bright Spot

Actually, one of many in an otherwise gloomy sort of day.

This cute new addition to the farm is an asian pear tree - a gift for Saint Tim from some good friends.

Boo loved to walk around the orchard. His morning constitutional. He frequently awoke before me and I enjoyed spying on him from my cozy bed. I miss that. We knew when he passed that we would bury him in his orchard.

I always plant something over their graves. Punkin is covered by asparagus, Sunshine has a sweet shrub, Sam has a dogwood... I wanted an asian pear for Boo.

Spring flew by in a blur though and I didn't get it done. Fall approached and I again was too disorganized. This birthday pear was a perfect gift. Exactly what Saint Tim wanted and exactly what we needed.

I like when things work out like that.

Thank you.

Cat-aclysm

n. Any great upheaval that causes sudden and violent changes.

Not the kind of story you'd usually expect me to tell here, eh?

It appears, following the loss of his trusted friend Boo, that the king of the condo has fallen. He was allowed to spend that one super cold night sharing his old cubby with Eli and at the time I was very happy, thinking all was going to be well and that Comby, Brushy, Eli and Claire Bear would all be friends and live happily ever after.

I'm not exactly sure what's going on, but for the last couple of weeks Comby has no longer been sleeping in his insulated and heated cave, but has been sleeping out on one of the wicker chairs. It too is heated (and surrounded by the lovely plastic) and he's seemed happy enough out there until the last few days.

Now he's moved to the other chair, with no heater, and even when the heated chair is empty, he doesn't seem to be "allowed" over there. I feel bad for him and it can't be just a coincidence that this started after Boo's passing. The odd thing though is all the cats liked Boo at the end and he seemed to enjoy their company as well. I can't imagine that he played the role of protector or "back up" for Comby, but maybe in some sort of emotional way he was.

I know that eventually they'll all get things worked out, but in the meantime, I feel almost guilty watching Wiwi sleeping in her cave. She's a crotchety old cat though and there is no chance she's sharing anything with anyone.

A New Angel Among Us*

Boo is gone. We knew it was coming last night and were with him. And it was odd. Like it always is. We left him on his porch bed so everyone could see him and Saint Tim buried him in the orchard this morning.

Comby was nowhere around last night when I turned the porch light off. He's never missed a night in his condo. This morning he followed us out to the grave site, walked around it and then stood for awhile looking at Boo and then after he finally walked away, Tim covered Boo up.

I normally wouldn't tell all the sad details, but more than a few of us have been intrigued by the Boo and Comby friendship. And while the "scientists" may say animals don't understand or have feelings, we all know different. Comby knew. Iris knew. Weaslie chewed on a stick.

You were a good dog Boo. Saint Tim said that you were one of the few dogs to actually "go to a nice farm in the country". We know you enjoyed your time with us.

Job Security

Be irreplaceable.

I guess it would be pretty hard to find too many other cats willing to be a dog pillow.

Won't You Take Me To...Punk-ytown

Eli

Clair Bear

Brushy

Why aren't they sleeping in the new cat condo? With the heated beds?

Comby.

All the rooms are his.

Even Boo's if he chooses.

No other cats allowed. Even if it's raining, windy and cold.

Can you believe Saint Tim is actually going to build another cat condo this weekend?

Movin' On Up

Everyone and everything on a farm has to be willing to multi-task. Even a dog house/cat condo. Saint Tim put the finishing touches on Boo's fancy dog house over the weekend, moved the cats into their "deluxe apartment(s) in the sky" and I promptly put it to work as a drying rack.

Those are Master Woolliam's pretty curls drying in the sunshine.

So why isn't Boo sleeping in his new house?

You can't beat an afternoon nap in the warm fall sun. See his eyes closed? (You can click to biggify the picture.)

Boo House Rock

Remember Boo's shanty town shack from last year? Since that actually worked quite well, Saint Tim decided to build him a real house this year...and not a minute too soon. Here is where we found him sleeping a couple evenings ago.

Even with Sunshine's wash towels as a pillow, a wooden pallet cannot be very comfortable.

The towel "blanket" only helps a little.

Here is where Boo's sleeping tonight.

Much better!

It Takes A Special Friend

We finally got some rain today. And it turned chilly. I'd like to complain about a cold rain when we sure could have used some warm rains for the last several months, but I'm not going to complain about any rain at this point.

Iris and Weaslie elected to come inside for awhile, but Boo seems to prefer to be outside. Especially if he gets to choose exactly which dog bed he wants.

Now this looks like a sweet picture of Boo and his friend Comby napping on the porch, but what you can't really see (as I took this picture through the screen door) is that Boo is soaking wet.

How many of us have friends that would still snuggle up to us if we were a wet, smelly dog?

Friday Feature - Thursday Evening

More porch sitting! We are so happy it's cooled off enough to eat dinner outside. Now if we could just figure out a way to eat dinner outside...alone.

Eli doesn't give you the time of day until you sit down to eat and then he just must sit on your lap. Iris, Weaslie (Miss Tilly) and Boo, while well mannered (mostly - right Weaslie?), stare holes through you trying to will a table scrap to magically hit the floor. Comby is good for awhile but then thinks things are too quiet and decides to pick on someone - which is funny when it's Weaslie (poor Weaslie). Brushy shows up and Iris has to pin him to the floor to wash his ears, but then Boo wanders over and gets too close and she has to snarl at him. Comby really gets into the mix then and slaps Claire Bear. Which scares Weaslie, so she tries to run away and runs into Iris. Claire Bear doesn't take any gruff from Comby and retaliates. Eli thinks maybe it's time to hit his porch roof condo and thecrazysheeplady loses her temper and runs everyone off the porch.

Saint Tim goes back in the house for more wine. Dinner continues. And as evening falls, we listen to the last of the summer cicadas and the birds wind things up for the night and watch the sheep emerge from the barn, saunter out to get a drink and then head out to graze in the cool of the evening.

Boo Makes A Bad Decision

Poor Boo spent much of his life in a kennel. And while we think he really enjoys living out on the farm with us, we know he'd be even happier if we didn't have a closed gate out at the road.

Boo sleeps very soundly. At least we think he's sleeping very soundly. So soundly that frequently you find yourself staring at him just to make sure he's still breathing. Somehow, even in that state, he's completely aware of what's happening around him. We have yet to figure out how he knows that front gate has been opened and goes from dead to the world to trotting (now walking) down the lane in literally a matter of seconds.

Last night was one of those times. He apparently had a great time though. It was written all over his face. And doesn't he look quite proud of his garland of dried flowers....and burrs. Holy cow, Boo!!!

Even in the midst of grooming tragedy (from head to tail!), look who's still standing by his friend.

Through thick or thin.

Garden Oasis

We are horribly dry here in central Kentucky, so I was surprised the other morning when I snapped a couple garden shots - green!

We did get a little, much appreciated, rain yesterday, but apparently these late summer plants and flowers can get along just fine. Miss Mollie, the scarecrow, is doing just fine as well, although she's been getting about as much spinning done as I have lately. Sigh.

Equally refreshing, Boo and Comby. I just can't get over these two. I hope Boo's trying to impart some advice about getting along with everyone and staying out of trouble.

Strange Bedfellows

Boo came to us several years ago through a collie rescue. He was hard on our cats though and almost didn't get to stay. Finally Brushy knocked some sense into him and Claire Bear soon after and then Eli gave in and they drew up some sort of truce, but have never completely forgiven him.

When Comby moved in, I'm afraid the three may have tried to set him up. "Yeah, that big dog is really friendly. He loves kitties. Yeah, you should go talk to him. That's what you should do." Either that or maybe Boo just recognized a fellow tough guy. The first time I saw them hanging out together I thought it was just a fluke.

Nope. These two have become good buddies. Which is nice. The groomer noticed today how thin Boo has become lately. At probably 15, I'm glad he has someone to grow old with.

More Spring

Since the Forsythia's don't last forever, I enjoy them while I can. So does Boo.

We had a beautiful day yesterday and I set up my "outdoor office" and got a good jump on skirting this year's wool. Like having the corner office...but better.

Iris and Weaslie helped, but you can see Iris' attention was mostly on those stupid sheep and why. are. they. out. in. the. horse. field?!? Being the police and all, she's not so jazzed on this idea.

It's raining here today so I'm getting some inside work caught up, making a felted sheep for a new friend in PA, and doing a little spinning. I was playing with the Supercard and blended three colors of gray from Baby Belly's 2007 fleece - a Jacob sheep version of neopolitan ice cream.

Boo's De-Luxe New House And How He Doesn't Get To Use It

Poor Boo. He gets too hot in the house at night, but it's too cold to spend the night outside, especially at his age (around 14 or so). He's miserable, we're miserable and we wish we could figure out a way for him to stay warm outside.

Well, he's too big for the average dog house and would be too creaky to crawl into it even if he could fit. What to do? New stove to the rescue! Not ours of course - I will never wear a stove out - but someone in town apparently did. This was a snag from the recycling center! A little creative duct tape, a thick cushioned bed and a thick layer of straw. Perfect.

So where's Boo sleeping these days?

Poor Boo.

Gone In 60 Seconds

Well, we sure needed the rain, but given a choice, we would never have traded some of our favorite trees for it. In a matter of under one minute, we lost the huge, old Bradford Pear (you seldom see those words strung together) that has shaded our house so well for at least 30 years, big chunks of two other trees in the yard and several big limbs from trees lining our road frontage. Two of the trees, the Bradford Pear included, were trees we worried about taking out portions of our house if they came down in the hopefully far, far distant future. Miraculously, they both fell in the best possible, and surprisingly opposite directions. Also surprising was the size of the "fence killer" limbs that came down just so to leave all our fences standing. Thank you.

While our loss of the big tree will be felt for years to come, the loss to the birds in our yard was immediate. Within minutes of the storm passing through, mommas and poppas were back to the never-ending job of bringing food to their babies, but there were no babies. The confusion on their faces as they flitted around the downed trees searching for their nests and little ones was just heartbreaking. Boo and I found several chicks hopping through the grass and were able to catch them and hide them under nearby shrubs, but the nests are gone.

We were not the only farm to be hit. Within 15 minutes chain saws were firing up all over the neighborhood. The county road crews were out quickly thereafter and as soon as the roads were passable, trucks and trailers filled with hardworking friends and neighbors came around to lend a hand. We all have a lot to clean up, but we are all okay, our houses are still standing, and our neighbor's sloppy joe's were not harmed ;-). So much to be thankful for.

So long good friend.

Scrub-A-Dub-Dub

I just gave three dogs a bath in less than 30 minutes! Thanks to Iris' Aunt Debbie for the Ortho Dial N Spray. It attaches to your garden hose and shoots the shampoo straight through all of even Boo's hair, right down to the skin. Scrub away and then dial it back to plain water and rinse. Could not have been easier.

I realize Iris looks completely traumatized in this picture. Rest assured it is not bath related, but due to some thunder building up in the distance.

New Wheel in the Boo-grass State

Spring has sprung. And with a vengeance! Everyone is mowing and weed-eating, mulching and pruning. Luckily the sheep are shorn, as it's been incredibly warm for this time of year. The horses are shedding hair everywhere and the chickens are in heaven chasing bugs down by the creek. We are probably going to pay for this nice weather later in the spring... or at the end of this week. Here's a picture of handsome Boo in the green grass.

I have my first show of the year, The Paris Art Fair, this weekend. Sounds exotic, but that would be Paris, Kentucky :-). Still, if the weather holds, you know what they say about Paris in the springtime... The moral of this story, other than to give them some free publicity, is that between spring chores and getting ready for the show, if you don't hear from me, I'm probably just up to my elbows in wool or grass clippings.

As much as I enjoy needle felting sheep and mowing grass, I'd rather be sitting at my new spinning wheel. I found this on eBay last week. It's a beautiful Jensen production wheel and I love it!
