Cat Sniffing Is Alive And....Well, Not So Grate Akshully

As always, Comby was happy to take a walk out back with me. Hank joined us when we got back to the front field.

"Hi Comby.  Did you have a nice walk?"

"Yeah, there were some balloons up on the fence next to Stella's so we went up to see what they were.  What's new in the creek?"

"Don't know.  Just got down here."

Murphy and Woody close in to commence sniffing.  I have no idea why, but sheep LOVE to sniff cats.

I've never seen them sniff a dog or a chicken.  Just. Cats.

"I know you're back there, Murphy. You better leave me alone!"

"Back off, Stupid Murphy!"

"I SAID LEAVE ME ALONE!"

"Alright you two, break it up."

Murphy wouldn't leave him be.  A minute later he was climbing down into the creek to make another attempt, this time dragging sweet, innocent little Baaxter with him ;-).  I decided it was time to put everyone in separate corners.  Comby was happy to oblige.

The Breakfast Club(s)

"Did you hear Mom coming?"

"MomMom?"

That's exactly what it sounds like :-).

To get from this point to everyone eating breakfast is a bit of a blur and definitely not something I'm able to take pictures of.  You'll just have to imagine Baaxter and Woody standing up on the back gate. They haven't figured out yet that I can't actually open the gate if they're standing on it, but hey, they're excited ;-).  Henri bangs on the gate with her horns.

Henri will also run over you without a thought, so make sure when you do open the gate that you get it open wide enough and quick enough that she doesn't crash into you...but that then only the boys can get through before Rebecca Boone and Chocula and sometimes Hershey bum rush you as well.

Mia and Ford patiently wait at the side door and calmly step into the aisle when invited.

The old folks (Henri and Ford) and Mia (the puny one) eat on the mat in front of the feed room.  This shot was taken on an auto setting.  The camera does the best it can to balance out the dark indoors with the bright outdoors.  Kind of an interesting shot.

This was taken using manual settings.  I bumped up the length of exposure so the sheep were brighter, but knew it was going to blow out the white trailer in the background.  Neither are great shots, but I like both if for no other reason than they tell me the story about how these three sheep eat breakfast.  With Weaslie and Claire Bear ;-).

There's a cut gate in the middle of the barn aisle.  Among other jobs, it also separates the kid's table from the adults.  I leave it open until all seven sheep are inside and the outside gate is latched.  Then Mia and Ford politely go past the cut gate to their food.  Henri bulldozes over and starts chowing down at the lamb trough.  Where you could never get a Cotswold to raise their head from a feed tub, Henri can be persuaded to move along.  Eventually.  And then that inside gate gets latched.

Baaxter has apparently decided he wasn't happy with where he was eating with his brothers and is jumping around, getting ready to jockey for a new position.  Hershey is looking on with disbelief as to why anyone would stop eating long enough to goof around.  Hershey's got some Cotswold in him ;-).

Baaxter has some "spoiled" in him.  Honestly, I think he's still completely surprised he's not still getting a bottle.  On days when he's being especially pitiful I'll let him sneak into the feed room with me and eat big ewe nuggets (see above) from my hand.

But mostly he's pretty well integrated.

And that's the sheep feeding portion of the morning program.  After everyone goes back out, the Adventure Chickens move in and get their scratch grains on the mat.  And then Weaslie and I go back to the house for a second cup of coffee :-).

Butterfly Bed And Breakfast

I've actually seen a few Monarch butterflies this year.  None while the milk weed was blooming though, which I'm curious about.  Or maybe I just don't understand what life stage I should be looking for then.  Mostly I've seen them just passing through, but this one stopped to re-fuel in the dwindling zinnia bed and I luckily had my camera handy.  Welcome tiny traveler :-).

Woolfest Wrap Up

This is going to be picture heavy because I liked my booth set up this year and want to be able to repeat it. And while I liked my set up last year and thought I'd repeat it again this year...I couldn't remember how we did it. So, let's take a (map-able) tour.  I'll try to point out some fun and/or historical highlights to keep it sort of interesting ;-).

I use this quarter round shelf as a work space and it probably goes without saying that I "straightened it up" before I took the picture ;-).

If you look to the right, you'll see a picture of Punkin from years ago.  My friend Julie took it and it's one of my prize possessions.  I hadn't brought for a few years, but felt sentimental this year and packed it along.

I really just can't believe I went from one pet sheep that I didn't have any interest in taking pictures of (but loved seeing pictures other people took of him) and gave his wool away each year to a whole flock of sheep, a small hand spinning business and a big girl camera of my own.  Isn't life funny. Punkin would be amazed.

On the left.

Back wall.

If the amount of merchandise looks a little light, that's because I wasn't smart enough to actually use my big girl camera on Friday, so had to re-take all my pictures on Saturday.  Sales were good all three days :-D.

I had four wreaths made and could have sold many more.  Get. Organized. Earlier.  Next. Year. There was something about the dark brown one that I decided I just couldn't part with, so I put a pretty high price on it in hopes it wouldn't sell...and two different people tried to buy it.  Luckily we were having terrible luck getting the credit card readers to work.  Whew!

Moving on to the right side.

I hang up some of my finished items made from out wool in hopes they inspire spinners new and old less new.  There are tags on each one giving the sheep's name and explaining that they are not for sale...  Saturday was so cold that I wore B. Willard's barn sweater.  I left his tag on to identify him and couldn't figure out why folks kept calling me Bea :-).

I usually use this table for weighing wool and keeping my drop spindling supplies handy.  I thought it worked well for calendars and Lamb Camp cards, but the scale in the back of the booth wasn't super handy (Note to myself for next set up).

Saint Tim had both calendars ready for Saturday thank goodness and I am so sorry for the folks that came by Friday to pick them up.  I got them put together and "sent to the printer" late and he really had to jump through some hoops to get them done for me.

You will only get that kind of service from your local printers (and so many other small businesses that are quickly getting pushed aside by volume corporations :-/). While getting "250 business cards for $10" sounds like a good deal, if you need any special services (design assistance, rushes, corrections...) that they won't provide...well, I'll get off my soap box.

The Lamb Camp cards and calendars are really cute I think :-).  I especially like the cover of the calendar and can't believe I didn't pick that as one of the original 10 card designs.  I am going to look into doing some prints this fall.  I think my photography is getting good enough that that's not an unreasonable idea.

Speaking of photography, here's a funny story from the weekend.  So I always run this neat digital picture frame on a continuous loop of pictures of our farm, sheep, dogs, cats, horses...so visitors who don't read the blog can get an idea of our farm and see how the sheep are raised and know how much we love them...

I always use the same thumb drive/storage device to store the pictures.  It lives in the box with the frame.  I took it out, plugged it in my computer to add some newer pictures (which I did manually so I'd know exactly what was being added), plugged it back in the frame and Friday morning turned it on.

The pictures started like normal...and then a couple scrolled on that I was pretty sure weren't supposed to be on there.  I watched for awhile and realized that it must have pulled all the pictures off my blog (or something).  I didn't think that much about it though until Small Farm Girl came in and saw herself on the screen!  She'd been at one of our Hug a Sheep Day open houses :-D.

My first thought was to take it home that night and try to fix it, but as the day went on with all sorts of crazy, random pictures from all over the place flashing up there, it turned into a fun game waiting to see what might show up next.  The realization that Graham Lamb's contact information kept popping up might answer a few questions ;-).  Luckily no little kids were in the booth when the pictures of 20 drinking a beer came around :-o.

Oh look, a flood washing out my lavender garden.  Yep, that makes it look idyllic here!

Tim doing his Shawshank Redemption shot when he got to the Flambeau River a few years ago.

Excellent, let's give Brooks Brothers some free advertising.  Seriously though, those were some amazingly cute lambies!

It was and endless source of fun and people started hanging around to watch just to see what might come up next.  And you really never knew WHAT that might be :-D.

"I think I earned a beer yesterday when those ladies were pinching me on the butt through the back of the chair!"

All in all it was a great weekend!  Sales were great, the weather was perfect Saturday and Sunday (and not horrible on Friday) and some of the nicest and neatest people came by and visited all three days.  Definitely one of my favorite festivals so far.  Thank you!!!

20's Ready

Unfortunately it looks like we're all going to be wearing rain gear tomorrow, but after tomorrow, the forecast is outstanding wool festival weather.  We can all wear our wool :-D.

We've got plenty of roving,  a few raw fleeces, lots of spindle kits, the latest Christmas card and all the previous years, Lamb Camp cards...  Unfortunately the new calendars won't be there until Saturday :-/.   They look really good though and I'm excited about both of them!

Come out to the Kentucky Wool Festival and give 20 a hug this weekend.   He's getting in shape for National Hug a Sheep Day.  And, if you take a selfie with a sheep...is it a shelfie?  :-D

So Yesterday...

...when I was taking some pictures and everyone but Baaxter was asleep, we heard sirens out on the main road.  Well, Hank heard them long before I did and came busting out of his sleeping stall with assistance detective Maisie on his tail.  Sirens sound like coyotes.

"All seems quiet out back."

"I can't believe I woke up for nothing."

"I'm going back to bed!"

Sorry Keebs for the embarrassing chewing shot.  Maisie ducked back under her door before I could snap a back up.  I always try to snap some extra shots so no one gets caught looking like this on the intertubes ;-).

Um, Okay...

The day started pretty bright and clear. Around 9:30, a thick fog rolled in. Now if we lived along a coast or something, that might not be such an odd event, but I don't remember ever seeing a sunny morning turn foggy like this.

A misty day makes for pretty pictures I think.  Since the camera was handy... :-)
