Picnic With The Pup

We moved everybody out into a slightly larger paddock this evening. Everyone seemed to be getting along "okay" (those Jacobs are a tough bunch), but just to be safe, we brought our dinner out to the barn.

We all still have a lot to learn, but we are really impressed with Hank. Everything we've had to "tell" him, he's only had to hear once. Of course he's still a puppy and we are still expecting some puppy problems for the next few months, but so far, so good.

The instincts of working dogs are fascinating.

What a handsome dog Hank is. It seems he is no stranger to wildlife that doesn't belong close to farm animals. He deserves lots of treats and maybe a special collar!

Dutiful and cute! You can't beat that. We only have the cute part down at our farm!

Keep these posts coming about Hank - he is truly a good dog already!

Bless your hearts for sleeping in the barn at nights, I think that would be fun actually. I bet Hank does a good job once he matures, he'll get the hang of it.

He is soooo cute! Do the 'mean' sheep try to butt him or do they just ignore him?

Actually we are more having trouble with them being afraid of him and running away. I've been told they'll eventually settle down and accept him. I sure hope so.

Hank is a handsome boy! Have you ever had a working dog like this before? It will be fun to watch him grow into this job.

It looks like he is doing a fabulous job and I agree that he is very handsome.

I'm sure the sheep will come around to his charms. I love watching the interactions between our sheep and llama.

I can't believe how big Keebler and Graham lamb have gotten.

It's great to hear that you have a lgd! You're lucky that your sheep are a bit skiddish of him, as opposed to butting him around.. our lgd was bullied quite a bit by the aggressive and protective mothers we had! (we had to make him a 'safe house to get away from them!) They all get along fine now. Glad to hear that you have an additional shepherd there on your farm to help out.

Hank looks very dedicated, bless his heart. I hope everyone gets adjusted soon and he turns out to be a gem. It is amazing the instinct that those dogs have. The hardest part would be me--thinking that the dog was lonely and needed to be with the human family. But I know they bond strongly with the flock and that is their pack. My thoughts are with you as you continue to work towards keeping your flock safe.
