Unfortunately I did not have my camera with me (again) to catch this a few minutes earlier at full color. Not sure what you'd call it - a bright red streak shooting up from the horizon. Not really a sun dog. More like standing inside a fiery rainbow...with only one side. Any thoughts? I'm guessing it's foretelling the extreme cold (single digits) headed our way.
Keep repeating "If it's frozen, it's not muddy. If it's frozen, it's not muddy. If it's frozen..."
Yeah, whatever.

It's a lovely picture no matter the temperature. The silhouette of the trees against the pink horizon is striking.

We only got down to 23 with wind chill at 13. We had colder weather last week (but no wind). Hopefully you are a little warmer than expected, too!

Now that I know about sundogs, I think I understand. So I am assuming it is a sun dog and you are about to experience horribly cold days and nights.

We don't have any mud. You could come up here. Oh, but we do have several feet of snow. And it's often below zero. Personally, I'd take the mud.
Only just now have the 3 minutes in a row to comment, although I do take time to view your wonderful photos. Firstly, thanks for the chuckle; if it's frozen it's not muddy is my mantra to get through these icy days. Secondly, I had not ever heard of "sun dogs", but did see the most incredible sunset several days ago and now it has a name. Thank you for all.
I've never seen a sun dog, but you got a pretty good shot there even if it wasn't as good as it could have been.
