The Birds And Bees

I had some company yesterday afternoon while I was taking yarn shots. The hummingbirds had some company too. They were none too happy.

See the bee to the left of the feeder? The dark strip on the right (messing up my favorite hummingbird shot to date :-/) is the edge of the porch post. Of course.

Between the bees, wasps and flies, the hummingbirds are at their wits end.

And apparently the wasps are pretty nasty about it as you can see by the bird (how many times it's size?) shying away.

An epic battle.

This drought has been awful. For everyone.

We were overwhelmed with hornets this year. Billions of them. We finally had to go around to figure out where the queens were hiding. I don't know what we will do if it is worse next year. Yikes.

You really don't think about all the epic struggles that are going on in nature when there is a drought (or too much rain..or...). I don't blame that little hummer in his fear of the wasp--that bugger looks angry!

I'd shy away from that wasp, too!

I just came from watching the same scene two doors away. Those hummingbirds have a long hard journey ahead of them. If they are going to make it they need lots of energy stored. I wish there was a way for the other insects to give them a break.

I had a lot of bees this year. So I put a very small amount of vasoline around the port holes of the feeder.. This seemed to help. Didn't bother the hummingbird, he still got his food..

Thanks Tiggeriffic. I'll try that tomorrow!

We're having the same battle on our patio feeders. Only Cody started snapping and ended up getting stung by a yellow jacket on his mouth.

WOW! What great photography!

We are burning up! After a long summer of rain, our fall is so dry and hot 90*+ that we are having red flag warnings.

I hope you get rain soon!
