Lend A Paw When You Can

Our local Humane Society held a fund raiser over the weekend. I ran over to drop a donation in the bucket and ended up walking inside to look around.

:-/

Years ago, when we first moved to our farm, I went over there to find a barn kitty. I wanted a calico and am pretty good at holding my own and setting boundaries - only a calico cat, only old Collies or old Goldens - so I don't end up in the newspaper or on one of those hoarding shows.

A gray cat grabbed me around the neck though and held on so tight that I finally said, "You are not the cat I wanted, but I will get you out of here."

I told the HS person I was going to adopt him and she tried to talk me out of it. "He's feral and older. We have other much better cats." (?) I'd already promised him however and brought him home.

Eli.

Saturday, amongst too many (some sick) kittens, on the top corner shelf, sat an adult calico kitty. We thought about it a couple days and Tuesday I went back to see her again. I didn't feel great about her chances for adoption (or staying healthy, honestly), competing with all the cute kittens.

"Please, please get me out of here."

Okay.

She came home from the vet today and is going to live in the lamb cage up at the barn until she and all the other cats (mostly territorial Comby) get used to each other.

A couple times today I took her out and sat in the hay stall with her. She's a sweet, friendly, snugly, purring, muffin making kitty...with zero interest in yarn of any sort - had the Turkish spindle with me ;-). I was so happy to see her get bored relax enough to fall asleep behind my back.

Then she woke up for a little while, moved over to my side and fell asleep again.

She has a nasty looking sore on her mouth. The vet said he thought it was just a cage injury, but we are going to keep an eye on it to make sure it's not something contagious. Her tests were all negative.

The sweetest thing was she placed her paw on my leg as she fell asleep. And wouldn't move it even when I shifted position.

I guess I'm hers.

Oh, this breaks my heart and makes me feel wonderful all at the same time.
She has definitely chosen you and that paw is saying "Thank you".
We all say thank you. She's one of thousands that need homes. She's so lucky...

And what might her name be? Yes, she is lucky to have joined up with you!

Yup, you've been adopted Sara! I'm so happy she found a forever home with you. Congratulations to both of you.

Bless you, dear girl! Both of you! All of my 4 cats are rescues - 3 from shelters as adults, one from a parking lot. They KNOW when they have been rescued and I believe, are grateful.

You take such wonderful care of your animals - thank you for saving the life of this kitty.

She's just beautiful and obviously very grateful. She'll be a great addition to the farm. Now you have the fun of finding her name. Thanks for saving her.

I have always been partial to calico cats, and if I ever get a cat, I think that is just the sort I would like. She KNOWS you've saved her. Bless your hearts.

Woot! Another one off the streets and into a kitty dream wonderful furever home! :-) Made my day, Sara. She looks like a lovely sweet kitty. Her little sores will most likely go away once her stress levels drop and she gets to live like a normal kitty.

Awwww. I'm a total sucker for the ones who put their paw (or their head) on me like that.

I love calicos! If they'd stay at teh barn instead of coming to the hosue to hunt my birds, I'd have cats. But in the past they've always found their way to my bird feeders, the screen on the porch, and thought the hoods of our cars made great napping places (and Dad didn't cotton to paw prints on his cars). Plus I'm allergic! But she is beautiful and I'm happy for you both! What's her name?

Undecided as yet, but leaning towards Raggedy Ann, which oddly has an historical tie with our hometown.

Dear Sara, beautiful soul! Now two cats have a loving home.

So good that you listened to her pleading, and wonderful to know that that she was the calico that you had seen in your mind.

She is gorgeous! I, too love Calicos, and my Emma was adopted by me 4 years ago. She's quite the traveling cat. Her foster parents found her in a NY City alley, rescued and doctored her, then moved her to Atlanta where they continue to rescue cats, have them neutered and doctored then find forever homes. 2 years later Emma moved to Iowa with me, and I've told her we'll move back East sometime down the road! Of course, with the serious Missouri River flooding situation, we might have to swim.

What a sweet cat. I love that she's put her little paw on you to let you know that she's yours and vice versa. Congrats - you are a muffin yourself.

Yay calico girl kitty!!!

And you are very very RIGHT - we've adopted older animals too, and found them to be wonderful -
Dexterdog the samoyed was 1 1/2 and lived in a twin cities backyard chained up - he was on his second home, but came back to the pound once again before we adopted him. Hes now going on 9 years old and we can take him anywhere - he's even stayed at a double tree Hilton lol best of all he's my co-worker. People think he's had all this fancy training, but its just been plain devotion over the years...

and tomez the cat was a year old when he was found on the streets with his collar growing into his neck. the pound thought he was such a good kitty that they hung onto him for months rather then putting him down. when we met,it was just like your Eli - 'dont let go, PLEASE!" He's now our mighty philosophical hunter here...and cat photography model extraodinaire...

Listen to Crazy Sheep Lady - shes right! please look at the older animals at the pound first before the babies - they make excellent companions too :)

I am partial to calico cats, too. Your beautiful kitty looks so much like my (dearly departed) Maggie. I think that they are the smartest of all the cats, too!

I looked at the smile on her face and thought "Bliss".

I think I'd name her Bliss. She's so pleased, relieved, and blissful!

My first kitty was a calico named Calico. She was awesome! I hope Bliss or whatever-she-may-be-named is awesome, too.

Well done!

She's lovely. I have a muted calico named Callie. You'll do much better naming your sweet girl, I'm sure.

I love a good cat story! I am probably one of those pathetic cat individuals as I have 11 of which 8 came from working at a vet hospital and saving them from being put to sleep cuz their owners believed they were disposable pets or from so called owners who just dont get it. I give props to all people who adopt and give a cat a loving home!

How awesome. What a doll. I really wanted to get a "barn cat" as we have allergies that kill in this house, but have rethought the whole deal. It's just too cold for one to survive the winter. Did the next best thing an got a bunny. My daughter is in heaven. Hope you enjoy your new family member.
